Children can learn words as early as 2 years old..
Communication skills for a child start to show up early in is life. During the first 12 months a baby leans to communicate and discovers the sounds of his language Besides, he ”practices” using them when he does those ”aaaaa” and those ”bababa”. Little by little he understand words then he begins to speak.
Toddlers usually say their first word between 12 and 16 months of age. The words he learns to say later usually refers to familiar people and things. They are also often linked to routines, like ”dodo” or ” hi, bye”. At this age the toddler is not yet able to combine words to indicate the things he sees and to express what he wants.
The toddler continues to develop his vocabulary around 18 to 24 months. When he says several words designating people and objects, he begins to name actions like eating, drinking. Some other sounds can be difficult for him to pronounce.
When toddler is able to say several words, he begins to put them together to build a two word sentences, such as: ” daddy’s gone.” If he tries to make slightly longer word combinations, he often omits the little words like my, he or to because they are difficult.
